guide to pruning wisteria
Wisteria is a much loved and often-grown climbing plant.
It can be trained as a small bonsai, draped over an archway, grown over a pergola or even trained to be a weeping standard.
The key to encourage flowering is to prune them at least once a year and preferably twice.
It is best not to prune your Wisteria in Winter because , if you do, you'll cut off the current flowers buds.
In summer, prune off the unruly growth close to the main stems to approximately three leaf nodes.
Again in autumn, trim back the young whippy growth to approximately four leaf nodes.
Wisteria flowers on second year growth and with regular pruning your wisteria will provide you with larger flowers.
After an Autumn prune you should get a great display of flowers in Spring.
In Japan, they hold an annual Wisteria festival to rival their Cherry festival.
