Valued in Japan where it is trained and trimmed into classical Japanese styles.
It has dark green, thick sharp needles.
In cultivation, this conifer grows to approximately 3-4M in the first 10 years.
Trees of over 30 metres tall can be found in Japan.
Some of the oldest living bonsai are the Japanese Black Pines.
