Known as the "Big Cone Pine".
It grows into a large evergreen tree with a broad, open crown.
It gets its common name from producing massive pale brown cones to 30cm long and can weigh more than 3kg.
Stout shoots bear long, blue-grey needles up to 35cm long, in bundles of three.
It is a native of the coastal mountains of southern California.
The bark is dark gray-brown to near black and deeply furrowed.
Best for parks and large gardens.
